SNEE3000 - English for Employment I (Beginner)
Course Description
English for Employment is a 12-week employment-focused English language course designed for SNAP recipients with beginner-level proficiency. Meeting 6 hours per week, this course introduces foundational English skills needed to successfully seek, obtain, and maintain employment.
As part of an ESOL for Workforce approach, the course develops essential speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while integrating key workplace communication and cultural competencies. Participants will practice real-world language tasks such as understanding job postings, completing basic applications, and communicating with supervisors and coworkers. Instruction includes pronunciation practice, vocabulary development, and guided reading and writing activities tailored to workplace contexts.
Career readiness is embedded throughout the course. Participants will create a simple resume and cover letter, receive support completing job applications, and build a basic profile on LinkedIn. Through role-plays and structured practice, learners will develop confidence in interviews, workplace interactions, and professional etiquette, including appropriate communication, teamwork, and cultural expectations in U.S. workplaces.
By the end of the course, participants will have improved their English proficiency, gained confidence in workplace communication, and developed the foundational tools needed to pursue entry-level employment or transition to the next level of ESOL instruction.
