An ESOL assessment test is required for entry into the EMT ESOL and CNA ESOL programs. If you have not taken this assessment, please call our office at (978) 556-3060.

 

ESOL for EMT

This course is designed for students who can benefit from additional English support to help them successfully complete the 14-week EMT program at NECC. Students will receive plenty of practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the English language. This course will give instructions on the reading skills needed to effectively learn the assignments in the EMT training book. During the course, students will gain confidence in using the language and EMT specific vocabulary to pass the certification exams and communicate on the job in their newly chosen profession.

The ESOL course is 14 weeks and is offered alongside the EMT course. ESOL classes meet synchronously on Zoom or in person twice/week for 2 hours each meeting. In total, ESOL students will receive 56 hours of English language instruction/support for the duration of the 14-week program.

By the conclusion of the ESOL portion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Understand the terminology in English needed to function on the job 
  • Communicate with patients in a clear way and ask questions of patients if something is not understood 
  • Communicate in English with coworkers, supervisors, and other healthcare personnel to safely perform their role as an Emergency Medical Technician

ESOL for CNA

This course is designed for students who can benefit from additional English support to help them successfully complete the CNA program at NECC. Students will have plenty of practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the English language with a focus on the vocabulary needed for the CNA program. During the 8-week course, students will gain confidence in using the English language for CNA to pass the state certification exam and communicate on the job in their newly chosen profession. 

The duration of the ESOL program is 8 weeks: 4 weeks of ESOL prior to the first CNA classes or reading assignment, 2 weeks of ESOL support during the CNA course, and 2 weeks of intensive review and individualized tutoring after the CNA program in preparation for the state exam. ESOL classes will be conducted using Zoom and students should set aside time for the whole 8 weeks to keep up with this program. Classes will meet 2 times/week for 2 hours each during the 4 weeks prior to the first CNA class. For the 2 weeks during the CNA program the ESOL class will meet immediately before the Zoom meetings with CNA instructors. Classes will meet 2 times/week for 2 hours each for the 2 weeks after the CNA program. This will total 32 hours of ESOL instruction and practice.

By the conclusion of the ESOL portion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Understand the terminology in English needed to function on the job. 
  • Communicate with patients in a clear way and ask questions of patients if something is not understood. 
  • Communicate in English with coworkers, supervisors, and other healthcare personnel to safely perform their role as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
