Course Overview: This course is designed to prepare English and/or Spanish-speaking students for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), which is recognized as a high school equivalency diploma. The course covers the five subjects tested in the HiSET: Language Arts - Reading, Language Arts - Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, with instruction provided in Spanish.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Language Arts - Reading: Develop comprehension skills by analyzing various types of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and informational documents.
  2. Language Arts - Writing: Improve writing skills through practice with essays, grammar exercises, and sentence structure, focusing on clarity and coherence.
  3. Mathematics: Cover fundamental math concepts, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis, ensuring students are prepared for both the multiple-choice and open-response questions.
  4. Science: Study scientific concepts and principles across disciplines such as life science, physical science, Earth and space science, with emphasis on reading and interpreting scientific data.
  5. Social Studies: Explore history, government, geography, and economics, focusing on critical thinking and understanding primary and secondary sources.

Instructional Methods:

  • Lectures and Discussions: Instructive sessions led by experienced teachers to explain key concepts and engage students in discussions.
  • Practice Tests and Quizzes: Regular assessments to track progress and identify areas needing improvement.
  • Interactive Activities: Group activities and projects to enhance understanding of the material.
  • Individualized Support: One-on-one tutoring sessions available to address specific student needs.

Course Requirements:

  • Attendance: Regular attendance is mandatory to ensure consistent progress.
  • Assignments: Completion of all assigned homework and classwork.
  • Participation: Active participation in class discussions and activities.

Evaluation:

  • Students will be evaluated based on their performance in practice tests, class participation, homework assignments, and periodic quizzes.

Outcome: By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to take the HiSET exam in English/Spanish, with a strong understanding of the subjects tested and the skills needed to pass.
